Nothing in the finish you wouldn’t want in the bath.

Every Waverley board is sealed with an OSMO VOC- and solvent-free finish that is food-grade safe, and left unstained: no stain, no dye, no solvents. Underneath it is cross-ply birch, chosen because it holds its shape in a warm, wet room. Made in Canada, from FSC- and PEFC-certified timber.

Food-grade safe finish

We seal every board with an OSMO VOC- and solvent-free sealant. It is food-grade safe, the standard we want for something that sits over the water your family bathes in.

Unstained, on purpose

No stain, no dye, no tinted topcoat. The grain you see is the birch itself, sealed and otherwise left alone, so it ages and picks up character the way real wood does.

The finish: food-grade, VOC- and solvent-free

The finish is the part of a bath board that spends its life in contact with steam, splashes, and whatever you set down on it, so it is the part we are least willing to compromise on. Waverley boards are sealed with an OSMO VOC- and solvent-free sealant that is food-grade safe. No stain, no dye, no tinted topcoat.

That does two jobs at once. It slows water absorption through the surface and edges, which is what keeps a wooden board stable in a humid bathroom. And it means the surface your glass, your book, and your hands rest on is one we are comfortable describing plainly: food-grade safe, with no VOCs or solvents in the sealant system.

It is still a natural wood product. The finish is maintained, not permanent. Worn or damaged coating lets moisture back in, so keeping the seal intact is part of owning the board. We would rather say that than promise something the material cannot deliver.

Ethical management and certification

When working with natural materials, responsible sourcing is critical. Many supplies today come from forests that are actively managed under national forestry regulations and third-party certification schemes. Independent certification systems such as FSC and PEFC provide assurance that timber comes from responsibly managed forests where harvesting levels are controlled, biodiversity is protected, and local communities are supported.

Waverley chooses certified or legally verified wood sources. That demand supports improved forest stewardship rather than uncontrolled exploitation.

Strength, style, and durability

What makes Waverley bath boards so special? We use cross-laminated birch cores that provide a strong choice when selecting your bath board. Alternating grain direction helps resist warping far better than solid wood bath boards. The cross-laminated structure spreads moisture-driven movement and internal stress in multiple directions, so your bath board stays flatter through wet and humid conditions.

Cross-laminated wood cores also improve load-bearing capacity. The layered core construction distributes weight across the full sheet instead of concentrating stress along one grain line, which reduces sagging and splitting under shelves, tabletops, or cabinet spans.

Rich veneer exteriors give a premium finish while preserving the board's core stability, so you get both appearance and performance without the drawbacks of movement in solid wood bath boards.

Moisture and rot resistance

When properly sealed, cross-laminated boards become much more resistant to moisture because the coating slows water absorption through the surface and edges. The layered construction also helps limit swelling and shrinkage, so the panel stays more stable than solid wood in humid conditions.

A solid moisture seal reduces the chance of standing moisture reaching the fibers, which helps prevent rot, mold, and decay over time. This makes cross-ply material well suited for furniture in kitchens, bathrooms, and other spaces where dampness is common. Regular maintenance of the finish is important, since damaged edges or worn coatings can let moisture in and weaken protection.

Ply core grade: no/zero voids

When using cross-ply materials in humid, wet, and warm conditions, having minimum to zero voids (air gaps) in the cross-ply core construction is very important. Air gaps can expand inside the wood cores from heat (in your shower, for example), and they not only encourage warping but also allow moisture in. Insisting on zero-void materials for our boards helps ensure they hold their shape and resist moisture.

Why cross-laminated construction is important

Cross-laminated cores are important for material stability. Bonding multiple cross-directional layers counteracts natural wood movement, expansion, and contraction caused by moisture and temperature changes. While strong, solid hardwoods can move along their grain, leading to warping, cupping, or twisting over time. Cross-ply design distributes internal stresses evenly, minimizing these risks and maintaining a flatter, more reliable surface.

Cross-ply cores also increase structural strength, as the opposing grain layers reinforce each other under load. This makes the material design especially well suited for humid environments like bathrooms and spas. Overall, it delivers greater durability, dimensional stability, and long-term integrity than traditional solid hardwood.

Designed for stability and durability

Because of its durability and strength, laminated wood cores are remarkably versatile. In furniture, it is used for dining tables, benches, cabinetry, and worktops with a variety of rich tones and resilience to everyday knocks. Its inherent resistance to spills and humidity also makes it a smart choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and high-traffic family spaces.

Beyond furniture, cross-ply materials are widely specified for exterior joinery and construction: windows and doors, decking, cladding, pergolas, bridges, and heavy-duty outdoor structures. When sealed, these materials can have a higher resistance to constant moisture, drying, and salt exposure, which makes them a favourite for boatbuilding, decking, rubbing strakes, and harbour structures.

Load-bearing strength and aesthetic appeal

Technically, cross-laminated ply construction delivers a strong blend of hardness, density, and bending strength. Cross-ply hardwoods perform confidently in structural and load-bearing roles such as flooring, stair components, heavy furniture frames, and even exterior beams. Its strength-to-weight ratio, combined with good dimensional stability, allows designers to create slender profiles that still feel reassuringly solid in use.

Visually, cross-ply materials appeal lies in the variety of characterful veneer grains available. Machined and sealed, such woods offer incredible choice for matching the decor of your bathroom and personal style preferences while maintaining durability and wood stability.
