Waverley Bath Playlists

A few moods for a longer soak: warm, slow, and made to be left running while the water does the rest.

The useful property of music in the bath is that it does not require hands. Everything else you might bring, a book or a screen, asks something of you. Music asks nothing, which makes it the only one of the three you can use with your eyes closed and both arms underwater.

That points at what makes a good bath playlist, and it is not the same thing as a good playlist. It wants to be longer than the bath, so you never reach the end and have to decide anything. It wants a narrow dynamic range, so nothing jolts you. And it wants to be started once and then left alone. The failure mode of music in the bath is picking up a wet phone to skip a track.

Two of the four below are ours. The other two are Spotify's own, and we have said which is which on each one, because there is a difference between recommending something and having made it.

Practical note: put the phone face-down on a side tray, out of the splash line, and start the playlist before you get in. A candle in the holder does more for the room than anything you can do to the music once it is running.

How we choose what goes on these lists

Sunday Afternoon Bath Jazz

Spotify · 15 songs · about 1 hour

Our own playlist, and the one we reach for most. Slow, warm, mostly instrumental, the kind of thing that fills a room without asking anything of you.

About an hour, which is not an accident.

On the board: Roughly the length of a bath before the water turns. Put the phone face-down on a side tray and leave it there.

Sade Adu Radio

Spotify · 50 songs · about 3 hours

Made by Spotify, not by us

Sade and everything adjacent to her: smooth, unhurried, low in the mix. One of Spotify’s own radio playlists rather than ours, but it is the right texture for a long soak and we are not going to pretend we could build a better one.

Because Spotify maintains it, the track list shifts over time.

On the board: Long enough that you will not reach the end of it. Start it, put the phone down, and stop thinking about the music.

Decompression Bath Bliss

Spotify · 16 songs · about 1 hour 20 minutes

For the end of a bad Tuesday. Vocal-led, slower than it starts, and meant to be played from the top without skipping, because the sequence does most of the work.

Dim the lights if you are going to bother dimming anything.

On the board: Best heard in order, which means not touching the phone. Face-down on a side tray, screen off.

Calming Classical

Spotify · around 140 pieces · over 8 hours

Made by Spotify, not by us

Quiet piano and strings: Debussy, Satie, Chopin and similar. Spotify’s own editorial playlist, not ours, and one of the most-saved classical sets on the platform.

At eight hours it is built to be left running, which is the point. Nothing on it will startle you.

On the board: Far longer than any bath, so there is no reason to touch the phone once it is playing. Candle in the holder, screen nowhere near the water.

The board the list is written around

A stainless rack that holds a book open and dry, a groove that holds a screen at eye level, and side trays for everything else. Made in Canada from cross-ply birch.
